Here are four (or “FORE!”) things to know about golf in America, courtesy of Golf.com:
- Nearly 24 million Americans play golf.
- 2.5 million people played golf for the first time in 2016.
- From 2011 to 2016, 737 golf facilities closed down.
- There are more than 2,300 “alternative golf facilities” (miniature golf, driving ranges, Top Golf, etc.).
Frisco-based entrepreneur Kathy Erickson saw these numbers impacting the world of golf and had some unique insights – and exciting ideas.
“I saw the success of putt-putt miniature golf and driving ranges, plus the recent popularity and growth of facilities like TopGolf,” says Erickson. “But for the millions of current golfers and people just getting started with the sport, there were two main issues not being addressed.”
“There are no facilities that enable golfers to focus on their short game. And there are no places to play at night.”
Seeing the Big Picture
“If you love to play golf, but you want to play at night, you’re out of luck. And if you want to practice and refine your pitching and putting, there’s nothing for you either.”
As an avid golf enthusiast and long-time player, Kathy understood these pain points better than anyone.
With her entrepreneurial experience and a market primed for innovation, Kathy was inspired to create a concept that would solve a number of problems impacting the sport.
Thus, the Short Game Place® was born.
The Short Game Place®
The Short Game Place® is an indoor, Par-2, skills golf course that allows golfers the opportunity to hone their short game skills (putting, chipping, etc.). The facility will be inside of a temperature-controlled building with extended hours so users are able to play “Day or Night, Rain or Shine.”
The Short Game Place® features:
- 9-hole, Par-2 skills short game course

- Temperature-controlled building

- Thursday thru Sunday: Open from 6:00 a.m. Thursday until 11:00 p.m. Sunday.

Code Authority and The Short Game Place®
Kathy spent a lot of time and effort visualizing the facility, devising the memberships, constructing the amenities, etc. After finalizing her business plan, she understood the overall project cost would be in the millions of dollars. In order to demonstrate her concept to investors, Kathy needed a professionally developed website and an integrated mobile application. Thus, she reached out to Code Authority.
Code Authority quickly got to work designing and developing the website, as well as creating a working prototype for the Short Game Place® mobile application. With these deliverables, Kathy could show potential investors exactly what they would be investing in if they chose to come aboard.
The team at Code Authority listened closely to Kathy’s vision and requests in order to build just the right custom website and application for her new business venture.
“When Kathy first met with Code Authority to share her vision and needs for the Short Game Place®, the entire team was ecstatic,” says Cory, Digital Project Manager at Code Authority. “After our very first conversation, we knew this would be something special and we wanted to equip Kathy with whatever resources she needed to turn this from concept to reality. Considering the overall cost and the current stage of the project, we felt the most logical approach was to provide her with tools that could not only be used now and in the future, but more importantly to sway investors.”

The Next Round
As of this writing, Kathy is actively meeting with investors and aims to break ground on the very first Short Game Place® facility in 2019.
The Short Game Place® is coming soon and Kathy would greatly appreciate any user feedback. There is a quick 5 question survey on her current site and any responses will help significantly!
